Science seminar at St John’s

St John’s is offering local people the opportunity to hear a world-class speaker who has been invited to give a science seminar at St John’s next week.

Andy Fletcher, President of LUE Inc. will be giving a talk entitled “There’s Nothing There, but Matter Matters” on Monday 28 May at 6:30pm. The talk has been set up for prospective International Baccalureate (IB) students at St John’s and their families, and IB Coordinator Mr Gary Paterson has extended the invitation to anyone in the community with an interest in science.

The IB diploma is an alternative to A-levels and St John’s has been running the programme for five years. The talk is designed to give the audience a flavour of the Theory of Knowledge element of the IB Diploma programme. Theory of Knowledge, or TOK, is one of the core elements of the IB Diploma Course, encouraging students to be aware of themselves as thinkers, to be aware of the complexity of knowledge, and to recognise the need to act responsibly in an increasingly interdependent and interconnected world.

Andy Fletcher’s entertaining and thought-provoking talks are described as “mind-blowing” and “life-changing” by students, and will offer an opportunity to experience the type of thinking expected of an IB student.

The seminar is free to attend. Light refreshments will be available and members of the IB teaching team will be present for an informal chat should you have any questions.

Limited places are available and anyone interested in attending should contact Kate Hunter at St John’s on 01672 519575 or email khunter@stjohns.wilts.sch.uk
