Students at The Sixth Form College, Solihull got a taste of their options after College this week, when the annual Higher Education Fair took place.
This is one of the biggest such events of its type in the country and saw lessons suspended and students invited in to meet with representatives from more than 66 universities across the country. These institutions included prestigious universities like Cambridge, Birmingham, Bristol, Manchester, Nottingham, Sheffield, Warwick and York, who all had stalls in the Sports Hall. Students learnt more about their choices and picked up prospectuses and other useful literature.
In addition, a host of expert speakers came to the College for a seminar programme. Running throughout the afternoon, these sessions provided students with the chance to hear from experts about particular fields of study and careers.
Among the subjects of these 40 seminars were Art & Design, Business & Management, Pharmacy, Politics, Sport, Economics, Medicine, Nursing, Dentistry, Modern Languages, Teaching, Performing Arts, Law and Media.
There was also an opportunity for students to learn more about Gap Year projects, as well as finding out how they could study for a degree while also pursuing employment by way of a sponsored degree route with companies such as Balfour Beatty, PwC and Ernst and Young. The latter will doubtless be of interest to many students for whom tuition fees pose a barrier to further study. Studying for a degree abroad was also represented; this is becoming of increasing interest to students as an alternative option to UK study.
Emma Hurst, Careers Co-ordinator at the College, said: “We have been running this HE Fair for many years now and it’s great to have so many Higher Education organisations represented in one place. The students are lucky to have the universities come to them and the event enables them to get really useful advice ahead of them making their UCAS applications later on in the year.”
Each year more than 800 students progress onto Higher Education from the College; indeed The Sixth Form College, Solihull is the largest provider of undergraduate students in the region.
