Basketball at Anthony Gell during the 2009/2010 season has again brought great success. This year we entered all the different categories in the Derbyshire County Cup, something we had not done for a long time, along with 2 teams being entered into the National Competition.
Unfortunately our year 11 boys lost in the first round to a strong team from Heritage School and our year 8 and year 10 boys were knocked out in the quarter finals.
The year 7 and year 9 boys had two very exciting games in the semi finals, both teams playing Fredrick Gent School. Having seen the lead change many times though out the games both teams fell short at the end and coincidently both teams lost by 4 points.
In the girls competition the under 14 girls (yr7-9) had two games conceded so entered their first game at the semi final stage. The girls played extremely well and over came a very big year 9 team from St John Houghton, one of Derbyshire’s traditional basketball strong holds. Less than a week later, and only one extra training session the girls played their final, again against one of Derby’s top basketball schools – West Park School. The girls lost the 1st quarter 6-10 and looked very nervous, but some inspirational play in the 2nd quarter saw AGS take the lead 23-18. After half time the girls went from strength to strength coming out winners by a margin of 31 points – 61-30. This win now puts the team into the National Competition as Derbyshire Champions.
The under 16 girls team are still in the County Cup and play their semi final next Thursday (11th March) away at Fredrick Gent where they will be looking to avenge the yr7 and 9 boys and coming away with the win.
The under 15 girls, which is the same team as the U16 girls team, have just finished their National Competition coming 2nd in the East Midlands Regional competition. This competition has teams from Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, Northamptonshire and Derbyshire, so 2nd place is still a fantastic achievement.
Finally the under18 boys have played some great basketball again this year and competed admirably against teams from much bigger establishments. In a 3 way tournament the team lost their first game, to eventual winners Bilborough College, by 4, before beating John Leggett School from Lincoln
